Representations of Unwelcomed Children – Public Discussion in Helsingin Sanomat Newspaper about Finnish Children Living in Camp of al-Hol in Eastern Syria in 2019

In this article, we examine the representations of Finnish children living in al-Hol refugee camp Eastern Syria. Our data consists materials published 2019 Helsingin Sanomat, largest subscription-based newspaper Finland, which analyzed using discourse analysis. As a result our analysis, identified and named three discourses representing from different perspectives. These are victim threat discourse, legal problem discourse. were portrayed as both need assistance potential security future if brought to but also they remained camp. bringing Finland was justified obligation, leaving aside other perspectives related helping children. described highly problematic. Across all discourses, represented unwelcome. This representation strengthened by describing through their mothers, justifying necessary evil, highlighting children’s connections Isis.
